In this area, winter temperatures during the daytime range from the upper 30s to the upper 40s. In the summer, the temperature can range anywhere from mid-70s through high 90s and on occasion over 100'. The average precipitation for this area can be 44 - 52 inches per year.
Jordan is one of North Carolina's Army Corps of Engineers projects and is 13,900 acres. It is known as one of North Carolina's most important water resources and among other recreational activities, boasts both dock and shoreline fishing as well as fishing from boats. Jordan Lake houses tranquil fishing coves, sandy beaches, wildlife and clean fresh water. It boasts of the fact that there are fishing tournaments on the lake year 'round and has Largemouth Bass, Crappie, Catfish, Hybrid Bass, Stripers and Bluegill. There are 24 boat ramps around the lake. While fishing here, you may have the privilege of seeing one of many American Bald Eagles in the area during the summer. Jordan has numerous stump fields and exposed wood which invites a good jig bite.
Lake Mayo is a 2,800 acre lake. You can rent a cabin in the area or stay in a hotel in nearby Roxboro, NC, if you want an overnight trip. For specific information in that web site about the lake, select Recreation. This lake has Largemouth Bass, Bream, Crappie, Catfish, and Jacks (Chain Pickeral). Lake Mayo is a cooling lake for a power plant. Mayo is an extremely clear, deep lake and contains lots of hydrilla. Huge jacks will attack anything white.
Lake Wheeler is fairly small at 650 acres. It was approved for controlled fishing and other recreational activities in 1959. Lake Wheeler has Largemouth bass, Bream, Shad, Crappie, Shell Cracker, Carp, Catfish, and other small species of fish. Bank fishing is not allowed (unless one is fishing in Simpkins Pond), but fishing is allowed from the wooden piers and boats can go anywhere on designated waters. Good lake for off shore structure fishing. Good crappie fishing.
The John H. Kerr Reservoir construction began in 1946 and was completed in 1953. This is a 50,000 acre lake that offers all kinds of recreational activities, including fishing. It is located around 11 miles north of Henderson, NC, and has Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Stripers, Catfish, Crappie, and Bream. The lake holds numerous fishing tournaments each year. Kerr has lots of quality bass in the 2 - 4 lb class and an occasional fish over 6 lbs.
Lake Gaston is a long, narrow lake stretching 34 miles from Kerr Dam to Gaston Dam near Thelma, NC. It is a 20,300 acre lake. This lake offers many recreational activities including boating and fishing and there is no restriction on boating horsepower.
Falls of the Neuse Lake is a 12,400 acre lake, a man-made reservoir that provides activities such as boating, swimming and fishing. Falls Lake stretches for 22 miles from the Eno, Little and Flat Rivers down to the dam at the Village of Falls and is located in North Carolina's Neuse River Basin. This lake boasts of Crappie, Largemouth Bass, Catfish and Stripers. Falls Lake is actually the municipal water supply for the City of Raleigh, NC. For those of you who want a challenge, Falls is touted to be a trophy bass lake and the Hawg Hunter knows where those bass are located.

Shearon Harris Lake is located in the Cape Fear River Basin near Highlands, NC. It is 4,700 acres and holds Largemouth Bass, Bream, Crappie, Catfish and more. The waters of Harris Lake are used for cooling the nuclear plant in that area. Patterns on the lake involve fishing the numerous areas of grass throughout the year. Excellent early Spring lake on crankbaits fished parallel to the grass.
It holds Largemouth Bass, Bream, Crappie, Stripers, and several varieties of Catfish. Gaston offers numerous docks which can provide excellent cover for fish. Numerous patches of hydrilla has allowed excellent cover for the bass population.
Hyco Lake covers 3,750 acres and has many recreational activities including boating and fishing. Hyco was contructed in the early 1960s. The lake has Largemouth Bass, Crappie, Catfish and Bream. Numerous fishing tournaments are held year 'round. The power plant discharges warm water into the lake which ensures fishing any time of the year with average temperatures at the discharge pumps being 70' or greater.
