Falls Lake - Drought 2005
Remember the picture above? Well, 2005 has been repeated again this year. As of today, October 3, 2007, Channel 5 (WRAL) news stated that if things keep going the way they have been, there will only be only 111 days left before Falls Lake goes dry. Here is WRAL's web site on up-to-date coverage on the 2007 drought.
We are in a severe drought situation, which has brought the area lakes down to levels that are dangerous to fish. Exposed areas of land or stump fields, if not avoided, can pose definite safety hazards, while at the same time provide an astute angler hints of where to fish, both now and when the water is back at its normal level.
Falls of the Neuse Lake is down over seven feet, showing creek channels and stump fields. These areas are prime for catching good size fish or even the fish of a life-time! Shad have congregated in these pockets and the bass are feeding and fattening up.
If the bass are chasing, a crankbait crawled through the cover slowly feeling every deflection can trigger a strike. If the fish are not chasing, but are holding tight to cover, pitch or flip a jig/pig into the cover and watch your line for movement as it descends. You may have to make numerous pitches to the same cover from different angles to trigger a strike if a fish is present. Once you determine the depth they are at, you may catch several in a short period of time. If the fish are holding tight to cover, you will have to determine if they are holding to clusters or to stand alone cover. You will have to determine what type of cover the fish want.
Ramps at the upper end of the lake will be hazardous to use at this time. Call Rollingview Marina (919-596-2194) to see the status of the ramp you want to use.
